Media and Processes

On our second day of class we talked about different medium, processes, grounds, and supports. I think it is really important to have a similar lesson with students of all ages. I am sure there are many out there, like me, who dread art because they are scared of sketching out portraits. But when there are so many different media and processes to choose from limitless doors open.
Some of my notes from that day included:

Media/Medium:
-what the artist uses to create their work
Ground: What ever is touching the media/medium
-- in paint its gesso - protects oils from ruining the canvas (support)
Support: what holds it together
-eg. Stretched canvas, actual wall in fresco
Process: how put the medium in/on the ground
-paint strokes, way things are cut and pasted
Creative process: whole process- ideas develop, trials, choices

For an in class activity we were told to make a mark on our paper using 20 different media found in and around the school. I think I had too much fun!
Additional media on back side : stair edgy, sticker, & gum wrapper
Other examples of Processes, Grounds, and Supports include (but are definitely not limited to):
Processes:
Scraping media onto paper, punching media through paper, stepping on media and then stepping on paper, smudging media onto paper, rubbing media together to produce crumbs to rub into paper, ironing media onto paper, soaking media into paper with water, Driving over media and then driving over paper using tires, shining light on colored paper to fade it for extended periods of time to fade it, gathering household items together and connecting them with string.
Ground:
Skin, paper, fingernail, cement pavement, mud wall, mirror, lightbulb, pottery shard, car window, teeshirt, hair, leaves.
Support:
Body, earth, Pyramid, house, tree, car, frame, ceiling, school, easel, a field, vase, water bottle, dresser.
