Paper Puppets

I loved this paper puppet activity. It was a great puppet craft that can be done using only: paper, hole punch, glue, scissors, and a tooth pick. However, if you want to do the same project we did, you will need photocopies of pictures and a chartpack blender.

First we cut out body segments of a person. To attach them together, we punched a hole on the part of the body that we wanted to be underneath the other body part. We then slid the top body segment under the body segment that was going to be behind. With a toothpick, a small dot of glue was placed in the center of the punched out hole. A small circle of paper (large enough to overlap all of the sides of the punched out hole) was then placed over the glue. Using a pencil the 3 papers were pushed together with lots of pressure and held there for 30-ish seconds. If you use too much glue it will not work as a hinge.  I am pretty excited about this 'new technology' and can't wait to use it in my classroom. We used it when making puppet flowers at the Springville Art Days Festival and it was a hit there too!

The second part of the project is to cut out what you want to transfer onto your puppet from the  xerox copy.

Next you place it (ink side down) on your puppet. Using a Chartpack blender you then color the back side of the picture until it becomes translucent. Here is a video of how to do it properly:

I loved my paper doll puppet and I know that this would be an activity that would be fun for students of all ages!
